Low and slow: the art of survey flying in the Valkyrie

Most pilots dream of going fast. Survey pilots get paid to go slowly. The Valkyrie Survey Corvette can reach 860 km/s and range 220 AU on helium-3 pellets, but the work that matters happens at walking pace, a few hundred metres above an asteroid that is rotating, irregular and very hard.

Prospecting guilds and mining cooperatives depend on survey crews to tell them what a rock contains before they commit drills and haulers to it. Science foundations use the same flying to map ice shelves on Europa. In every case, the instruments aboard the Valkyrie, lidar, magnetometers and gravimeters, need the ship to fly precise grid patterns at constant height and speed. That is far harder than it sounds when the surface below is spinning and its gravity pulls unevenly.

Our 12-week Survey Corvette Rating divides into two halves. The first covers the cruise side of the job: long-range navigation, fuel planning for multi-month deployments and two-pilot cooperation with a survey team of four. The second is all proximity operations. Students learn to station-keep against irregular gravity, match the spin of a rubble pile, and fly survey grids without drifting.

We train on the Vesta Survey Range, a set of instrumented asteroids we lease. Students fly 100 simulator hours and 85 hours in the Valkyrie. The course ends with field week, where crews survey real targets for working prospectors and deliver the data as part of their assessment. Several crews have found deposits their clients later mined.

Tuition is 118,000 credits and the first-time pass rate is 89 per cent. Mining cooperatives and cartographic societies sponsor many seats, and self-funded places remain for the November intake.

The best survey pilots I know share one quality: patience. If you enjoy precision more than speed, and you like the idea of being the first person to really see a piece of the solar system, survey flying might be your path.
