Deep-Space Command Endorsement

Endorsement Command of long-range explorers such as the Odyssey Deep Explorer beyond the orbit of Saturn

The Deep-Space Command Endorsement authorises a pilot to command long-range exploration vessels, principally the Odyssey Deep Explorer, on voyages beyond the orbit of Saturn. Out there, help is weeks or months away, so the IFSB treats this endorsement as a leadership qualification as much as a flying one.

Applicants need a Commercial Pilot Licence (Orbital), at least one heavy type rating and 2,500 hours of multi-crew time, plus a psychological suitability review. Training requires 240 simulator hours including a continuous 21-day isolation simulation, 210 flight hours on Odyssey vessels, and a deployment as deputy commander on a real outer-system leg.

Lumen's Deep Explorer Command is the accredited course. Outer-system flight time logged on the Outer-System Ice Runner Rating counts towards the multi-crew requirement, which is why many ice runner pilots follow this path. The endorsement is revalidated every 24 months.

Exploration companies and cartographic societies require it for every expedition commander.

Holders must also complete a refresher in crew psychology and isolation management before each new expedition, regardless of how recently they were endorsed. It is among the rarest qualifications in civilian flying, with fewer than 150 holders.
