Gas Giant Atmospheric Flight Endorsement

Endorsement Atmospheric skimming passes at Jupiter and Saturn in the Nimbus Gas Skimmer

The Gas Giant Atmospheric Flight Endorsement authorises skimming passes through the upper atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. It applies principally to the Nimbus Gas Skimmer, the fusion-ramjet ship used by helium cooperatives to harvest hydrogen and helium-3 from the cloud tops.

To qualify, pilots need a Commercial Pilot Licence (Orbital), 500 hours as pilot in command and a radiation-dose clearance, because the Jovian belts impose strict limits on lifetime exposure. Training requires 140 simulator hours, 90 flight hours in the Nimbus and a check ride that includes a full-depth scoop followed by an engine-out climb to orbit.

The endorsement is issued by the IFSB on recommendation of Lumen Pilot Academy, currently the only accredited civilian provider. Holders must fly at least six skimming passes every 90 days or complete a simulator recency session.

The handbook includes our Jovian weather briefing guide, widely used by working skimmer crews.

Holders must also renew their radiation-dose clearance annually, and pilots who reach their lifetime exposure limit can no longer exercise the endorsement. Many therefore combine skimming with other ratings to secure long careers.
