Gas Giant Skimming

Advanced Enrolling
Artwork of the Gas Giant Skimming

Few kinds of flying are as dramatic as skimming a gas giant. A Nimbus pilot dives into Jupiter's upper cloud deck at hypersonic speed, opens the intakes, gathers hydrogen and helium-3 while the hull glows, and then climbs back to orbit before the atmosphere wins. Gas Giant Skimming is the only civilian course that teaches this, and it leads to the Gas Giant Atmospheric Flight Endorsement.

The Nimbus Gas Skimmer is 240 metres long, carries a crew of six including two pilots, and holds up to 9,000 tonnes of harvested gas. Its fusion ramjet burns hydrogen scooped in situ, so fuel use is just 0.6 tonnes per 100 AU, but only if the pilot flies the scoop corridor precisely. Too shallow and the intakes starve; too deep and heating and drag climb fast. The 14-week syllabus covers atmospheric entry physics, thermal-protection limits, radiation management in the Jovian belts, storm avoidance and abort procedures.

Training is run from our Jovian detachment on Ganymede. Students log 140 simulator hours, including hundreds of rehearsed dives through modelled Jovian weather, and 90 flight hours in the Nimbus, progressing from high, gentle passes to full-depth scoops. A final module adapts the technique for Saturn, whose gentler gravity but stronger winds demand a different approach.

Cohorts are small: six students and two instructors, matching the Nimbus two-pilot cockpit. Tuition is 154,000 credits. You need a Commercial Pilot Licence (Orbital), 500 hours as pilot in command and a radiation-dose clearance from our flight medicine team. The next intake starts on 19 January 2188.

The first-time pass rate is 85 per cent. Helium cooperatives around Jupiter recruit almost every graduate, and several sponsor seats each year for promising pilots willing to relocate to Ganymede or Io.
