Ore Hauler Type Rating

The Leviathan Ore Hauler is the largest ship most pilots will ever fly. At 880 metres long, with a crew of 22 and a hold rated for 140,000 tonnes of refined metal, it needs six pilots on the flight deck at once, and it behaves less like a spacecraft than a small moving moon. The Ore Hauler Type Rating is our longest single-type course outside command training, and it is taught almost entirely in the Asteroid Belt.

The programme runs for 20 weeks at the Lumen outstation on Ceres, with field phases near Vesta. The first six weeks focus on the deuterium fusion slurry drive, which consumes about 11.4 tonnes per 100 AU and behaves very differently from the helium-3 pellet engines most trainees know. You will learn to manage neutron shielding limits, reactor warm-up sequences and the long standoff between drive and habitat ring. After that the emphasis shifts to crew coordination: a six-seat deck only works if everyone knows exactly who is flying, who is monitoring, and who owns each emergency.

Students log 180 simulator hours in a full six-station Leviathan deck replica, followed by 140 flight hours aboard working haulers on scheduled runs between Ceres smelters and Mars orbit. Convoy flying, laden turns at a top speed of 160 km/s and emergency jettison drills form the final assessment.

Each cohort of 12 trainees (two full flight decks) is taught by four instructors drawn from veteran Belt captains. Tuition is 196,000 credits; most places are sponsored by mining cooperatives and smelting combines, which is why the course is usually waitlisted. Entry requires an Atlas Heavy Freighter Type Rating or 1,000 hours of heavy multi-crew time. The next intake starts on 2 February 2188.

First-time pass rates sit at 82 per cent, reflecting a genuinely demanding check ride. Successful pilots receive the Leviathan Ore Hauler Type Rating and are among the best-paid flight crew in the Belt.
